In the excerpt from, Extreme Perception and Animal Intelligent, authors Temple Grandin and Catherine Johnson are concerned how psychologists affirm that people who believe animals are intelligent are deluding themselves. The authors state that many animals have extreme perception; like dogs that are very good sniffing out contraband, drugs or detect explosives in place where human can’t. That’s mean dog are using advanced perceptual abilities to solve a problem, no dogs was born knowing how to solve or how they can act in a certain problem. When the ability is part of the animals, they are considered intelligent but not confused intelligence with training. On the other hand, animals can’t predict something before it starts; animals are trained to act after something starts. According to the authors, only 10 percent of animal owner said that animals can predict something, in the majority of cases are convulsion, heart attack, etc. Authors conclude that animals who do things incredible are very intelligent, the same way for humans.

In my opinion, animals are not intelligent due to the following reasons: First, animal can’t reason if there is a problem, they can’t resolve a complicated situation or make a good decision. When a new situation is presented to an animal, they act on instinct because they don’t know how to behave in a new situation but if they are trained their behavior could be different. In the other hand, some scientifics said It is very difficult to affirm if animal are intelligent, but there are animal learn quickly. Second, animals act on instinct because they are not able to think the concept of one situation. For example, if a lion wants to eat, they must hunt and kill another animal; after eating the prey, the lion doesn’t have feeling of guilty. The only instinct he has is survive. Another example, when animal has breeding; the mother protects them even with her life. In many situations are demonstrated animals acted on instinct. Finally, depend on what kind of animal are trained, the time to have results could be quickly or slowly. Animals training doesn’t mean that are intelligent, animals can have the ability to learn quickly or not. The majority of animals trained respond as they were trained. For example, if they are trained to find drugs, they have to find drugs (They couldn’t find shoes or another thing). As a result, it is very difficult to affirm if an animal can think. According with some researches, people can’t confuse training with intelligence and people can’t evaluated animals with test that are for human.

In the excerpt from, How smart is smart?, author Dorothy Hinshaw Patent presents a Andrea Anderson who had an accident near her house when the storm struck. When Andrea was covered up by the snow, she screamed desperately for help and a dog call Villa heard Andrea’s cries. Villa helped Andrea save her and after that Villa was recognized as Dog Hero for her bravery, loyalty and intelligence. The author said some scientifics would explain that Villa was a wonderful animal but she didn’t understand the concept of danger. On the other hand, Villa only acted on instinct. For example, when a mother protects her baby. Hinsshaw concludes that there are a lot of experiments that show some animals have mental abilities.

There are three reasons why Lulu acted on instinct. First, Lula was afraid what was happened with her owner and the only thing that she did for him was to go out, and was amazing to find a motorist in the street that entered to her house. Intelligence can’t be attributed in this case because animals like Lulu can’t think, they only act. Second, animals that are trained have the capacity to respond to an event determined through feats that help people to save life. Lula was not trained and in that situation she acted on instinct. For example, if she were trained, she could call the owner’s doctor or alert the neighbor. Finally, she can’t think or it is so difficult to affirm that animals don’t think. Animal are evolved through the time and in some cases they show intelligence but if they are intelligent why they not improve their life or not reason after an act?. As a result, animal’s intelligence has to be measured through standards to animals not for humans.
